In the first of our Game of the Year 2020 videos, Aoife breaks down why Hades has been a much-needed refuge for her this year. From its stunning art design to its ever-evolving mechanics, from its universally kissable characters to the amazing soundtrack, Hades is definitely something special, and it launched on Nintendo Switch at the time we needed it the most.

  1. Hades is certainly my GotY. I've just recently gone back to it since I never completed the epilogue and I actually want to 100 % the game (something that I always say I'll do but never actually do).

The fact I could pick the game back up after well over a month of not touching it and instantly get back into the loop (and surprisingly complete a full run on my first time back) just speaks to the strength of the title and it's design.

Now excuse me I have a fury and a grim reaper to romance.

  2. Cannot age more. Been playing a lot of games this year. A few of them I was so hyped before they came out. But hades was an out of the blue recommendation getting a be friend and I feel in love. The music, solid gameplay, story, and a truck load of thirsty traps was a total surprise. Barely even touched the genre before. Everyone needs to give this game a try

  3. It's got to be Half Life: Alyx for me… to come back to that franchise and in such a new medium as VR, and to absolutely nail it in story and gameplay…

    …but I haven't bought Hades yet…

  4. I had heard about this game when it came out but it didn't seem like something I'd be interested in. Then I watched you stream it and I bought it straight away. It's my goty, and it's only competition is breath of the wild, which I played for the first time. I've loved every minute of it, thank you for that. Now say it with me, Dusa is best girl.

  5. I love this game. I've never really played roguelike before, but gave it ago after hearing Johnny praise it on Dicebreaker. Now I've finished the main story and epilogue and I'm still going back for another run. Definitely deserves all this praise.

  6. Hades was my game of the year as well. I remember watching gameplay of it a year or so when it was still in PC early access, hoping it would be ported to the Switch once it was fully released. After getting my mitts on it, it did not disappoint. As you stated, there is enough variety in boons/weapon combinations to keep every run interesting and pulling on all of the narrative threads is extra motivation to keep coming back even after you conquer the final realm. I'll be playing this one for a while.

  7. I haven't played this because it looks a bit too much like Diablo, except with a lot of zipping around and bullet-hell. But I've heard so many good things, I guess I have to give it a shot.
Also, I giggled way too much at the Bone Hydra.

  8. I've never been into rougelikes, never been into any sort of game where you throw yourself at something over and over until you finally beat it. But Hades is also my GOTY, for all the reasons in this video!

  10. My obvious and out there predictions for what Zoe & Ian will pick for GOTY:

    Zoe – Obvious: Valhalla
    Out There: Among Us

    Ian – Obvious: Alyx
    Out There: Phasmaphobia

My GOTY pick is Bloodborne (I played it for the first time this year).

  11. Eurogamer is such a fun channel with its fair share of sillyness, I almost forget these guys are proper video game journelists. Good to see Aoife flex them writing muscles, such a great video and really well made and looking forward to the next 2 as well. Looks like Rob from Access has some competition when it comes to getting people excited about games.

  12. Hades is definitely my game of the year – I am having a ton of fun with it. Roguelike games haven’t really appealed before but the story and characters in Hades are just so well done, and the mechanics are challenging without feeling punishing. Thank you Aoife for introducing me to it with your Eurogamer stream!

  13. after watching a Youtuber play it for months, I finally bought it for myself for Christmas, and while I've had to turn on God Mode because I am not a very competent gamer, I've enjoyed the game so much. I also think I've never encountered another game where you can fail twenty times in a row and not feel a single failure was a waste of your time because you're getting the resources and knowledge to eventually succeed. you learn enemy attack patterns, the boon combos that are most devastating, when to choose different rooms, etc. and you get darkness, gems, nectar, keys, the opportunity to see Sisyphus, Eurydice, and Patroclus, and fulfilling Fates by various means as soon as you buy that from the Contractor.
there's so much to do and it all synergizes in a way few games bother to do. Resources don't usually feed into each other so seemlessly, or get so fully integrated into the gameplay. it's exquisite.

in conclusion the Game Awards voters are utter fools who should resign from their posts for not giving Hades Game of the Year and instead awarding a game produced through brutal crunch, also awarding it Game Direction and thereby directly rewarding gross mistreatment of labor. Compared to Supergiant which treats its employees really, really well.
