  1. A hobby is just doing something you enjoy doing, it does not require any changes to anything or not, walking is a hobby, running is a hobby, reading is a hobby, gaming is a hobby, there’s no limit to something being a hobby just because of the outcome, it’s all about the enjoyment

  2. I liked the discussion of hobbies and wanted to hop in because I think it’s an interesting one to be had. You suggested at various times that a hobby isn’t something done passively. I tend to agree and thought I’d try to put a finer point on it—a necessary characteristic of a hobby is that it is a pursuit of sorts intentionally undertaken as such. What I mean by that can be illustrated by contrasting “pastimes” (something we do to pass the time enjoyably) with “hobbies” (pastimes we do in pursuit of something else).

Listening to music, watching tv, reading a book, playing video games—each of these activities are pastimes. We sometimes pass the time doing one of these activities for no other reason than the enjoyment they bring. For example, I might listen to music or play Snake on my phone (I’m stuck in 2004) for no other reason than I’ve lost cell reception on the train and my prolonged use of electronics has trained my brain to issue a Pavlovian-like response to the perceived onset of boredom—thumb-twiddling now requires an interface.

However, I might do either activity in the same exact setting in such a way that I do either not only as pastimes, but as hobbies. I might be listening to music not in a passive way, but actively so, in an intentional effort to more fully experience the totality of the song’s artistic expression, for whatever insights that heightened experience may bring. I might be playing Snake, not just so I can avoid the unenjoyably boring passage of time on the train, but because I’m trying to set a new personal best after decades of failed attempts.

Also, I’m bored on a train. The end. Thank you for coming to my TEDx talk.

  3. My guy, I love TCGs and everything but they are so dang expensive. If you're not going to play or have a group of friends who will play with you, it's not worth it. It can be cheap, but to be competitive, it is really expensive.

  4. "Investing" in Magic cards is only barely better than investing in NFTs. At least you get to play a game, you don't have to lose your house, and nobody can right click save them!

  5. magic is a fun hobby if you just want to play and have fun
if you want to buy the official cards and play with a lower power level, it can be fairly cheap, or you can proxy cards if you want to play the expensive formats

  6. I've been enjoying this series. I think a fun spinoff would be how few boons can you take to beat 32 heat. Like just start off with your 6 boons and try to make it to the end

  7. Hey Haelian… I have a video idea. May be stupid lol.

Have you ever done an Ultimate Build run? Using a mod to give yourself a perfect selection of boons at the outset and seeing how fast you can beat the game?

I'd be interested in seeing what aspect and boons you'd choose to move the absolute fastest.

  8. At 25:45 you could have at least looked in the Well to see if you could have purged something inessential to afford like… a 3rd Hermes? (Or just rebuy the same boon — perhaps at a higher rarity — ie for lols).

  9. i came for the hades i stayed for the silly little conversations you have with chat.

I think it's possible for video games to not be a hobby if someone plays them very casually. some candy crush on the phone or some FIFA with friends every now and again. it really just depends on the level of engagement I think. same with TV, I think it can count as a hobby for someone to watch dramas for example because they fully engage with them on the regular. I think there has to be a sort of semi regular repetition of the activity too. I like bowling but I don't do it enough for it to be a hobby, I think. We have terms to differentiate between hobbyists and non hobbyists of an activity too. Audiophile, Cinephile, "casual" gamer etc. I think if someone self identifies as a hobbyist you can't really deny it, though.

  10. Watching TV shows is sort of the same kind of hobby as reading a book. I would value reading higher, but it is the same thought process for me.
You watch a movie / show and get to look at the craftmanship, the writing, the way scenes are shot, acting – that can be a hobby even if you are just doing it for yourself.
Not everyone who is reading is in a book club either.

  11. One thing that I thought about with the whole 'is it a hobby?' conversation is why the question itself matters. 'Hobby' is such a loose term because it's just a way of describing what people do. The term might be used as an ice breaker: "What hobbies do you have?" or used to categorise items, but it ultimately doesn't matter what is or isn't a hobby. Who cares if someone is active or passive or whatever during what they do to pass time pleasantly?

  12. not to ignore the challenge of the vid but re: hobbies, I feel like what makes a hobby a hobby is specificity and depth of knowledge. "Watching TV" as in, watching a couple of shows here and there you like, isn't a hobby in the same way that catching a few movies every year doesn't make someone a "film buff" (which is just a nice way to say "watching movies is my hobby"). But if you specifically like watching soap operas or dating shows or singing competition shows, then that is now your hobby because you can compare different kinds that have popped up, can understand changes over time, can recognize reocurring faces/trends, etc. You get pumped when a new soap opera/dating show/singing comp, etc drops. You have become a "connoisseur" of that type of show.
