Curse of the Dead Gods probably wanted to come out before Hades. It’s a good game (a very good game, I’m giving it 3.5/5 in my written review on DDNet), but it has some particular frustrations at the front-end of the game that make it more difficult to get into than it needed to.

Once you’re over that hurdle though… well, it’s really quite excellent.

In this video, I discuss how, despite being so stylistically similar, Hades manages to be something so immediately appealing to a broad range of players, while Curse of the Dead Gods will likely be one for just the roguelike faithful.

  1. I always know I did a good purchase when I see the game I bought reviewed in this channel 😛 I fundamentally agree with your view on the game, both here and in your website review. You said: "Really, though, Curse of the Dead God's biggest problem is simply that it exists in a ridiculously over-saturated space, and doesn't do anything meaningful to help it stand out" I think that market over saturation is indeed its biggest problem, there is just way too much competition, but I do think COTDG does something meaningful to stand out: I find the curse system really interesting and engaging and love the light-dark mechanic, I think those are very unique and give the game an extra layer of strategy that I personally missed in Hades. As for the combat, once you get the hands of it, I actually think I enjoy it more than Hades, perhaps because I find the more slow paced-strategic combat decisions of soulslike games more compelling. What I do think this game lacks is enemy variety. Hades I think is the more "grandiouse" game, but I actually dont know if I will actually end up playing this one more, I see it kind of like a DarkestDungeon-SlayTheSpire-Hade-Souls weird but satysfying mix that so far has me hooked! Cheers!

  2. After beating darksouls 3 other games became very easy to me and i saw this game with the same stamina, parry and dodge mechanic and i really loved it, the dodge and parry mechanic is maybe 50 or 60 percent easier than dark souls but it still gave me challenge
