Hades – A Rambling Review

This has become the game I’ve sunk more time into than anything else I’ve ever played. So I really should talk about it.

  1. Genuinely one of my favourite games of all time. I picked it up on a whim and have since put hundreds of hours into it. Have paused playing since I finished rounding out all my relationships and was pushing through the pact of punishment levels, but I want to get back to it to take out Hades on Extreme Measures at some point ☠ There are so many brilliant tiny details.

One of my favourite things about it is all of the different relationships and the brilliant way they are represented throughout the game. The story of Achilles and Patroclus, Dusa being the most adorable aro/ace, and [SPOILERS FOR END OF RELATIONSHIP PATHS]

the fact that when I deepened my relationship with Thanatos after having gone all the way with Megara, there was an explicit discussion of the non monogamous nature of their relationships. Also, at one point Achilles reassured me that most of the gods are naturally polyamorous, and it genuinely made me feel better about pursuing both of them.

…And then there is the threesome scene, ahaha.

  2. Hades is truly brilliant, genuinely love it so much and it is such an easy game to adore and enjoy. Always great fun dropping by your streams when you'd play it so I'm intrigued to see what comes next (assuming you don't play more Hades on stream lol)

  3. I picked up hades after watching Jim Sterling's review and since I've purchased the game on 3 separate systems, completed it on each and I still feel like I haven't paid the company enough for the sheer quality of this experience chefs kiss

  4. I love how the game is designed to allow you the player to really develop a relationship with the various bosses. By the end, you legit like asterius and find Theseus to be a dick.

  5. I've been playing this since early access on epic, at first the game even though it only went up to the first boss, had less weapons, less characters, some characters missing art it was already one of the best game on day one. I've seen how much they develop the game in the span of 2 years( kinda). Now I bought it 3 times and I regret nothing.

  6. Hades is an absolute gem and was a huge bright spot during the lockdown dark days.

My favorite thing about the game is how unashamedly and refreshingly Queer it is. Another YouTuber, I believe it was James Somerton, pointed out that most lgbt rep in video games is optional and can be ignored.

Many praise the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series for their inclusiveness but should a player choose, most of the lgbt characters can be discarded, killed or skipped entirely as opposed to the essential hetero cast.

That is not the case in Hades. Zagreus is canonically bisexual and there is nothing that players can do to ignore this.

Regardless of player choice, Zagreus does have romantic feelings towards his male love interest. And to receive certain items and advance the story, these is interactions must be played out.

To advance towards the main ending players must also involve themselves in the story and relationship of Achilles and Patroclus. And in doing so discover that Zagreus has a crush on Achilles 😂.

Their story is just as important as Eurydice and Orpheus. It was really, really nice to play through a protagonist that’s a little like me and not be painfully aware that I was considered merely a toggleable afterthought.

  7. I have not played Hades. But if you like the "pet the puppy" button, you might appreciate the fact that the root word in the name Cerberus means "The spotted one." That's right, Hades, Ancient Greek lord of the underworld named his Dog "Spot." 🐶🐶🐶😁

  8. I think you'd enjoy supergiant's other two games. Same great music, same amazing voice acting, same gorgeous art, plus fascinating gameplay. Transistor has the best music imo, and a really interesting in depth combat system; Pyre has a completely different gameplay loop, and a better story than hades, taking massive advantage of the format of the game to tell a really impactful story.

  9. I only started Hades a few weeks ago and searched for videos on it. They were all recorded a year or two ago and I felt I may have missed the boat. Thanks for uploading this today! Now it feels less like history.

  10. This game became a large component of my mental well-being throughout the pandemic and I’m just thankful that it exists. I’m really happy it has reached all sorts of people.

I’m a huge fan of the developers too! Supergiant has consistently put out great, thoughtful, and interesting games over the years and they all offer something different. I recommend all of them. You can really see their progress in maturity and greater mastery of craft through each game.
