Hades isn’t my GOTY, but I can see how a lot of people have made it theirs. This is a brilliant game and one that has got me thinking about how important roguelike design has become to modern videogames.

  1. Honestly, I like Hades mostly for its style. The Voice Acting gives a lot of personality.
As a roguelike I feel Hades' meta progression is just waaay too slow. the 30~ hours pale in comparison to my 100+ hours in dead cells where I feel like I can do well with whatever the game offers me (instead of being let down by bad/ poorly synergizing boons).

  2. Hades is a wonderful game, awesome music (as always by Darren Korb) and visual design. For me, it gets cluttery about as often as Risk of Rain 2 – which is: very rarely. But yeah, options to alleviate that would be nice.

  3. First clear between attempt 20-30 sounds a bit too much? I got first clear with my 16th attempt, coming into the game blind. Good boon combinations eliminate the need for much skill tbh.

  4. this is a pretty good overview. but i gotta say, i disagree with the visual clutter argument. all enemies have telegraph animations and sounds before an attack. For the example you showed, The Minotaur has two separate grunts for his spin and charge. Same for Theseus, a loud beeping occurs and a reticle appears and glows red just before he throws. I believe Hades handles conveying player information pretty well, coming from someone who usually dislikes rouge-like games

  5. Agree so much about the visual noise.

I love the lore and gameplay and voice acting and everything about Hades.

But the visual diarrhea of particle effects made the game hell as you progressed forward

  6. You missed commenting on rogue legacy, which has the "death as progression mechanic" and you barely touched on one of the key elements of hades, the amount of piggybacking on greek mithology. The story told in the game has A LOT of greek mithology with barely any change, and that helps inmensely to get on the ride fast… it is superbly done.
I personally think 9 wins is a good amount , the game trying to hook you up (what every moa or mmorpg does) but via story and via variety of runs simultaneously.
The only complain i can give for the game is a very realistic one. The designers have done the ABSOLUTE MOST with the resources (money) available. If they had more money chances are it would have been given to more enemys and more enemy design.. but that is (my guess) quite expensive in comparison.

  7. Skill up would you review blasphemous? Hades reminds me of that game. I know it’s not similar but it just remind me of that game. Maybe check it out ? I would like to hear what you think of it

  8. Honestly the visual noise argument doesn’t make sense to me, especially in comparison to Risk of Rain 2. There were multiple times in that game where something would take a chunk of my health off or outright kill me in a single hit and I just never would know what I did wrong because there are like 20 enemies on screen at any given time with a few of them being boss monsters with super attacks. In Hades I always feel like there’s just enough for it to be chaotic but also tell you when you’ve made the mistake, and I never felt like I wasn’t learning from them.

  9. Roguelike games didn't just start to pick up momentum lately. You just didn't pay attention to the many excellent ones that came out in the past 5 years. In your mention of previous roguelike games you totally skipped 2015 that had Crypt of the Necrodancer, Darkest Dungeon, Nuclear Throne, Downwell and a bunch of other roguelikes. You gave the prey expansion a mention for 2018 but not Into the Breach wich was weird and then again Dead Cells and Into the Breach weren't the only great roguelikes from that year, there were games like Moonlighter, Wizard of Legend and Below. 2019 had Slay the Spire, the criminally underrated masterpiece Children of Morta, Cadence of Hyrule (idk how you forgot it's existence), Dicey Dungeons (a game I don't personally like but a lot of people enjoy it and it's quite popular compared to most indie games) and Night of the Full Moon. And the worst thing about what you said is that you gave horrible examples of roguelikes from 2020, stuff like Neon Abyss and Griftlands are just… bad, I think anyone who played them would agree that they're boring as hell and mediocre at best. idk what Dreamscaper is and knowing how much I like to explore indie games and rogulikes in particular, that says something. I only know BPM thanks to your video and ngl it looks sick and then of course Risk of Rain 2 and Spelunky 2 are spectacular but the problem is that there are actually roguelike games, FROM THIS YEAR that are a lot better than the ones you gave as examples like the brilliant Noita, the bloodpumping Scourge Bringer and the early access debut of Rogue Legacy 2… idk that part of the video just ticked me off. I HIGHLY recommend you go play Into the Breach, Crypt of the Necrodancer and Children of Morta seeing as to how you clearly haven't played them. They're not as good as Risk of Rain 2 for me but I would put Into the Breach on the same level of enjoyement as Hades personally. These three games along with Dead Cells, Risk of Rain 2, Enter the Gungeon and Slay the Spire are really top tier video games that should be played by anyone who remotely enjoys videogames.

  10. As a casual player, i appreciate the use of difficulty scaling and how it's used to suit the player. If god mode didn't exist, I don't think the game would be as readily accessible to players like me who want to enjoy the story (which ofc is phenomenal) as well as the gameplay. I've been avoiding other roguelikes because of the failure state and because of perceived difficulty. Tl;dr it can be a great challenge for experienced gamers, and it can be customized to be just right for casuals without adding or removing gameplay elements. I love it.

  11. Yeah, i really like this game, the uniqueness of each weapon, and multiple boons really change the way you play the game, for example dash-deflect (athena) means your dash not only for getaway, it also offensive, and daedalus boons, it is in my opinion, best boons in game, because some weapon need a weapon modifier, like the bow, basic attack needs to be charged (ok make sense) but in game like this, its easy to get cornered, daedalus provides no charge option, this game is great, and after 24 run, i finally beat hades 1st time using spear, deflect, riptide, and triple attack

  12. this game is wild fun for like… 45 mins… then you realize this is the whole game,,, that 45 mins over and over and over just with a new trinket in hand and maybe a few extra rooms this time.. ive already fought the first three bosses 70 times and here goes 71- alt f4.
