I knew that I’d eventually have to do this one and any reasonable guitarist would be afraid to try and tackle one of the coolest boss battle themes in 2020 with some of the most brain melting solos over it from Daisuke Kurosawa and Masahiro “Godspeed” Aoki. Unfortunately I’m not reasonable and always seem to underestimate songs like this. Since I’m typically trying to play songs that aren’t arranged for guitar on a weekly basis, I find myself really looking forward to taking on songs actually written for the instrument I’ll be playing on. Even so, in this case it was still Expert Mode.

I opted to use the exact recording of my last cover of God of the Dead in hopes to cut down on the time it’d take to release this cover, but with transcribing the whole thing myself by ear and having to really get my arrangement down for the video so it would look the best I could do, it almost didn’t get finished in the week time limit I give myself for these. I was excited to really dig in and learn some new things from this one, but constantly found I was running out of time so I’m excited to hopefully return to this one day and really study what makes it so cool and try to implement it into my own playing.

For the video, I opted to only have the two lead guitars focused here since the backing is just what was recorded for the God of the Dead cover I did and I didn’t want to detract from the focus of the solos here. I wanted to use LED lights to simulate stage lighting but knew the dimming would cause shutter effects and look kind of weird, but I actually leaned into them for this video hoping they would look kinda cool and glitchy. I realize in retrospect that glitchy doesn’t make much sense to the material, but it DID look really cool at parts, though I’m sure it’ll make some film snobs in the comments squirm. To seperate the two dueling guitar parts, I played them on my two Ernie Ball Majesty’s to help differentiate the parts mostly for myself to remember since it was a lot of music to memorize in not a long amount of time (I swear it wasn’t JUST to flex my two Majestys, haha). It definitely helped my brain keep each line together!

I actually got to meet Godspeed prior to the pandemic at NAMM 2020 and got to speak with him a bit. He’s extremely nice and insanely knowledgeable about guitar sound and playing. We also worked on a charity project this past year revolving around MHA titled “You Say Run” where I did a solo alongside Ichika, Jun Senoue, and Guthrie Govan watchable on Caleb Hyles’ channel! It’s so humbling to get to work on such cool projects while continuing to do what I’ve always done and continue to learn. Thanks so much for watching. I don’t think I got the solos perfect, but I did my absolute best and hope that it’s something you all enjoy listening to. 🙂

  1. This certainly ended up being quite a extreme measure cover! Even with using the backing track from the previous God of the Dead cover I did, I had my work cut out for me trying to emulate this absolute note flurry shred song! This was insanely tough to pull off….

  2. I guess you could say this fight was murder–
    In all seriousness, I always get super excited when you put out more Hades covers. This song doesn't look any easier than the fight where it plays, and you do it so much justice. Good job!!
