He Descended Into Hades | Douglas Wilson (Sermon Short)

Salvation only is possible because Christ descended into Hades, and He—our Christ, our Messiah—came back.

  1. Jesus wasn’t telling people to “be nice.” He was telling them to live in truth and love, a message very disruptive to religious and government institutions, a message that angers those filled with hate and insecurity, a message that sees the same consequences in modern times when not superficial like the “be nice” crowd.

Christ saves us from sin, weakness, and corruption through his love. Killing our savior didn’t save us, it awakened us to his love, the love we should want to demonstrate towards others and ourselves. You may judge yourself for hurting others or yourself. You may judge the world for hurting you. We all do wrong things. The world we live in is very twisted. But Christ loves you unconditionally. Christ loves this world unconditionally. It is through that love we can transform our own hearts, transform our families and communities, and transform this world into a heaven on earth. Christ delivered his message and now it is up to us his servants to do the work. Our enemy isn’t “those other christians” or that other political movement. Our enemy is our inability to open our hearts to the love of Jesus Christ.

  3. Brother, there's no biblical evidence that Christ went into Hell to free those who were captive (0:48). He descended into Hell, yes, but not to free prisoners, but to suffer-to make atonement for sin, etc. That has always been the historic orthodox position. You're probably referring to Ephesians 4:8 to prove your point, but that text is telling us that Christ by His life, death, descended into the grave and into hell, and resurrection destroyed Satan's power of death. He has released those from the bondage of sin by the Cross, and made them captives to Himself and to His Kingdom, instead of the kingdom of darkness to which they had belonged.

I had a discussion with a orthodox Christian brother recently about this very issue; he believed that too! He dried to persuade me that Christ went into Hell to free those in Abraham's bosom. To me, that was nothing more than imaginative assertion! That kind of interpretation misses the meaning of that verse, which I already explained.
