Jewish people in Jesus’s time, did not have a concept of hell. Hades came from the very same concept in Greek, hades. After all they were living with and writing in the greek language. Some ideas crossed over into the bible authors work. They used Hades in the New Testament in the same way Jewish writers used the Hebrew ‘Sheol’ in the Old Testament. How do we know it was the same concept? Because in the septuagint where the OT was translated to Greek they would also use Hades.
Think about it, not only does eternal conscious torment not seem logical, more importantly it doesn’t seem LOVING.
Hell is not really an idea in the bible, in fact there are four words that were translated to one generic “Hell’ a full 56 times in the KJV actually. The first to really drive this point home even though the words have their own meanings. Sheol, Gehenna, Hades, and Tartarus are all used for specific context and none of them look like the modern ‘hell’ that is popularized today.
Hell was and is a metaphor in the Bible, this series will walk through it step by step explaining the definitions and origin of the Hebrew words and Second Temple Jewish beliefs.
This is a HOT TAKE, I get it. But I ask that you debate kindly. Especially if you consider yourself a Christian. Really really be open to researching this topic. Men use hell as a fear tactic to control you, when the Bible and Jesus had a very different aspect. Hell is on earth.
