When Hades came out in 2020, it became all the rage incredible quickly. And for good reason, it had that beautiful artstyle in the isometric perspective that Supergiant had become known for but it was a far larger project than the developer had ever tried to make before, it had way more content, way more dialogue, and way more replayability.

So unsurprisingly it was their biggest game yet, and the first game they ever thought was worthy of a sequel.

but if you consult the negative reviews about it…

they’re not so impressed…

  1. As someone who is monochromatic colourblind if a game does not have a colourblind mode or assistance it can be unplayable. Warning indicators just not visible at all and sometimes just becomes a visual mess of chaos.

  2. i have with Hades 1 problem, there is not much god boon. And they dont add more. I like game but every run is same (for me, and ye i finish game on true ending) and that say guy how love rogue-like games. But only reason why is for me this game 0/10 is you cant have Kratos boon.

  3. 6:33 yeah OK this whole bit is just "I have no idea of the difference between roguelites and roguelikes and I am blaming the game for it"
If you don't like roguelites it's fine but don't trash the game for it

  4. This video confirms to me I'm not really interested in playing hades as someone who is a huge fan of roguelikes. It just seems like it's a streamlined roguelike made for mass appeal and frankly like it's not much of a roguelike at all

  5. I think for me personally, the learning curve makes sense and works very well. Even if it might create that initial difficulity spike, it creates a natural development of Zagreus alongside your skill level. This makes it impossible for a new player to accidentally come too far into the game on their first attempt. It would (in my opinion) ruin the story a bit if you for example manage to reach asphodel on your first ever run. The mirror makes the progression of the game more linear alongside the story elements, without actually stopping the player getting further than one specific point. The game tells you that you have every chance to win even in the beginning, but it forces you to become stronger with the mirror before you actually have any real chance. For most players (like me), this would be the case without the mirror anyways, but it doesn´t ruin the progression for us either. When we´ve become skilled enough to beat the game, the mirror has caught up with us and the power level of Zagreus doesn´t come in the way of us winning. But for the people who learn how to be skilled quicker, the mirror limits them and forces them to follow more or less the same progression as everyone else. In my opinion, the mirror works perfectly to enhance the feeling of progression in the game.

  6. Hades was some of the best gameplay and story mix for the first 30 hours. Up to hour 50 was fine cause I was still unlocking new stuff, but then up until hour 70 it was a slog to try and grind or get true ending.

I feel the gameplay left a bad taste in my mouth so I don't remember the game as fondly, but I can't deny how amazing tjose first 30 hours were.

I just hope that the gameplay is very different (relatively speaking) in the sequel because I wouldn't be able to play a full hades again, great story or not.

  7. there is one thing that everyone trying to play the game should do, and it's to never ever by the death defiance, trust me when you beat hades without having it it feels so good.

  8. When I play a roguelike, I want to have explosion everywhere every seconds and crazy stuff happening constantly so I think that's why I didn't liked hades and I LOVED risk of rain 2.
(That's what I think I don't say hades is bad, I actually had fun on the first hours but it's just not for me)

  9. My reaction speed was never quite great, and since 16 it might've gotten way worse. I had hard time enjoying the roguelike aspect of the game, not least because I prefer to accrue upgrades over time and play them in a workshop instead of relying on pure luck. As for visual novel… I can't say I didn't like characters, just that this particular type of visual novel pacing didn't appeal to me all that much. Zagreus's complicated home and live life feels less like a roleplay or a movie abd more like peeking into someone's life. Not in a good way.

That said, I can't claim it's bad as everything seems to be very competently done with a lot of fans. And the visual design of levels, monsters, characters, as well as VA – all stellar. It really does sone justice to the greek mythology, not just paying a lip service. My respect.

P.S. My favorite game by Supergiant is Transistor.

  10. I definetly like Hades, but not how I like other Rogue likes. I got 50 hours in Hades and i'm bored already, it just doesnt have the same amount of replayability to me as games like The binding of isaac. I have 100% in that game with 800 hours and would still boot it up for a more unique run than any amount of Hades runs had given me so far. Its a good game, not so much a good roguelike for me personally.

  11. I just started playing this game actually!
I love that it's a visual novel and a rouge like. But the thing is, I'm really bad at rouge likes or bullet hell games because my brain works a bit slow. I instead have to memorize a strategy which could take a while. That's why I like the mirror and over powered upgrades, makes it more doable for a smooth brain like me.
Although I didn't realize there was a god mode.
    Rip me
Though I don't want the game to end too quickly so I may keep that off for a good while anyway.

  12. Dadedalus Hammers are not rare. There is a guarantee for at least 1 to appear in each run, (although you may choose not to grab it in favor of something else) can appear up to 2, and you can or may have an anvil at the last Chafon shop that removes 1 random hammer effect but gives 2 other random ones, giving a total of 3 Hammer Enhancements.

Also, I personally like the difficulty curve of Hades. It does a good job into making the game feel challenging and full of opportunities to improve both statistically and in skill, making the player feel comfy and confident in their evolution, until the heat starts to go above 4 and present slight issues and new surprises (specially extreme measures) ranking the difficulty all up there again, fitting for a fully upgraded player.
