  1. As a roguelike i feel Hades is a bit of Resident Sleeper, just move forward and don't die, no gamba in sight. I feel like the think holding it back is the lack of risk, you get pickups with no downsite whereas in isaac, i still remember the pain of picking up tiny planet for the first time or plethora of other stupid stuff you can do to ruin your run.

  2. HAYDS.

Edit: Thanks Dan for giving the game a(Nother) chance. I know there was a lot of pressure from everyone to do so, and you were fair about it. See you again in 2024.

  3. lol Dan you're being super impatient and asking chat way to many questions early on. Just let the game unfold mah dude. It's an awesome experience with a insane narrative direction. talk to everyone every time you see them. there are appox 21,202 lines of dialog. It's super organic the way it unfolds. Not just an arcade game though it does have insane replayability

  4. The issue with roguelikes, nearly all of them, is that it's random, but not in a way that really matters. You take a repetitive game, that's not inspiring in any real way gameplay wise, and ask the player to play it over and over and over again either for gamba, or for unlocks and small upgrades that make the game as fair as it should've been in the frist place. It's dull, and the idea behind it is now, in 2023, dull and overplayed as well.

  5. I think the big thing is that the story and characters in this game is extremely important both to progression, gameplay, and to the appeal, so if you skip dialogue and are only interested in the gameplay, a lot of the motivation to play and appeal is not there. The main thing they use to motivate you to reach the end is that it advances the story. Like the other Supergiant games, the gameplay is largely in service of the narrative.

It is pretty on rails as a whole, run variety comes from what boons you are offered and what choices you are given, but you will largely be facing the same challenges. How they spice it up is that the more you win, the more "curses" they make you put on your runs to make them harder, plus they incentivize you to use all 6 weapons. Those can change things up a fair amount. So it's all about beating the game with a given weapon, and then doing it again at either a higher difficulty or a different weapon, slowly mastering the game as you learn more about the characters and advance the story.

  6. This game has so much to offer in terms of run variety. You have 6 weapons each with 4 unique forms. That's 24 different playstyles with even more variety added from the boons you choose.

Not to mention this game has the best narrative of any roguelite/like I've ever played, and a soundtrack for the ages.

However, I can see how this game is not for some people. You really have to be interested in the narrative to hold you over until metaprogression really starts to kick in for that run variety. But Dan is right, it is pretty samey. And that's coming from someone who has over 500 hours in the game and once held the WR speedrun. A lot of choices you make before you even start the run then just act it out. If I start a run with the intention of a specific build 9/10 runs I just get that build and execute it. There's nothing really in the run that could shake that up.

  7. I get what Dan's saying about lack of choice. I really felt it when playing The Binding of Isaac (particularly early on when the item pool is super limited.) Felt like it was always, fight through a bunch of rooms until I reach the Item Room/Shop/Boss and then do it again with the same 50 items showing up always.

Turns out these types of roguelikes bank on us playing them over and over to start getting all the toys to play with 😅

  8. Honestly, absolutely fair criticism. The game is geared way more towards skill based gameplay/speedrun, really not the "zany" kind of game. Also "lore"/acting is one of the main strenghs of the game

  9. Definitely agree on the whole "zany" point. You dont really get any insane runs where you know for a fact you will win, and skill is required the whole way through, for better or for worse depending on who you ask
