  1. I used to be an engineer testing high speed connectors and cables. Your overly long ethernet cable isnt a problem at all, you can send eth through just about anything because even gigabit is relatively slow. HDMI is quite a bit faster actually, but still relatively slow compared to top of the line commercial stuff (and that was true a decade ago). The gold plated connectors a la monster cables were a complete scam though. Most of what the consumer could see is just a ground shield and has very little impact on signal integrity so long as its connected somewhere. Gold plating on the signal lanes is mostly only used for corrosion resistance, and will actually slightly negatively impact the performance. You could think of it as punching a wall, or punching a wall with a latex glove on. The glove will provide a bit of squish that is technically measurable but not significant. Having a mismatch of materials kind of does the same thing with electronics, it will reflect a little bit of energy and absorb a bit too, making the signal worse. Just because gold has a lower resistance than copper does not mean its better, you have to look at a lot more than that to determine whether a given cable meets spec, and whenever you have a change in materials or geometry you have s change in how well it transmits a signal. Just bending a cable will produce more signal degradation than gold plating though.
