  1. 1 Peter 3:18-19 say: "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison,"

I heard this shows that Christ did descend, but not to save people from out of hell, but to make his victory lap as he preached to the spirits in prison.

    Is this correct?

  2. Hades was the place of the dead where the spirits were until the resurrection. It had a bad side for punishment and a good side called the "bosom of Abraham." While Jesus was dead in the tomb his spirit went and "preached to the spirits in prison." The word "hell" is very misunderstood today.

  3. hmmm… John Calvin said that if Christ did not descend into hell, then He did not fully experience death and the consequences of death… then His victory over death is incomplete…

  4. I think it’s pretty clear from Acts 2:31 that Christ actually did descend into a literal fiery hell. The text doesn’t say that Christ didn’t go there, but that he wasn’t left there.

  5. Jesus descended to the place of the dead to preach to those in prison. Hope more of the Reformed retrieve this ancient belief.

Those who are interested in more on this, you should check out episode 87/88 of the Theology in Particular podcast.

  6. John Clavin saw Jesus Descend into Hell on the Cross. Eph. 4:9 NASB 1995 "NASB 1995
(Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth?" The word "lower" means " comparative from <G2736> (kato); inferior (locally, of Hades):- lower.

  7. Thank you for the video Pastor Matt. The problem with this interpretation is that it puts the Apostles Creed out of order: he was crucified, died, and buried [and then, flashback to cross again] suffered the torments of hell on the cross? Seems unnatural and repetitive in a very condensed creed, does it not? I'd love to see you interact with another (I believe, more Biblical) option offered by Sam Renihan, a confessional reformed Baptist. See the Theology in Particular podcast released 4/3/23.

  8. Jesus told the story of the rich man and Lazarus. The rich man was in Hades in torment(Hades ISN'T the Lake of Fire, as Revelation says Hades will be thrown INTO the Lake of Fire). Lazarus was in the bosom of Abraham, which was not a place of torment.

  9. "descended into Hell" was added to the Apostles Creed in the 5 century. So, the earliest versions of what was probably a baptismal confession did not contain that phrase.

  10. "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water" (1 Peter 3:18-20).

  11. He did go down to hell. He really gave up His spirit and died, and descended down to Hades.

He did it to open up a bridge for all those who had come before Christ (and would come after) and once and for all overthrow Death and Hades.

Jesus went down there to preach the gospel and to call His sheep to Him. His sheep hear His voice and they come to Him, and they need only to bow in repentance and behold the Son of Man lifted up and accept His mercy and they are taken up into His eternal kingdom.

What the enemy believed was his greatest victory turned into his greatest defeat, when all the gates of hell were flung open and the prisoners were freed.

  12. Matthew Everhard, the Bible tells us that Jesus went to Hell. Acts 2: 27–32 the same Greek word and place as
    Lk 16: 22–25.
    Where He suffered pains.
    Acts 2: 24.
God didn't loose Jesus from the pains of Spiritual death, HE DIED in agony. But God did loose Jesus from the pains of Spiritual death and Hell.

    Jesus died Spiritualy.
    Ps 22: 1. Matt 27: 46.
Both the Hebrew for forsaken in Ps 22 and the Greek for it in Mt 27, means.
To Forsake, To Leave, To Abandon.
Which means Jesus was without God.
Eph 2: 1–5 says they have been made alive with were dead in trespasses and sin. They weren't physically dead, they were Spiritualy dead.
Then v12 tells us what Spiritual death is,
"Without God". Jesus was without God when He said My God why have you forsaken Me. Which was Spiritual death.

Why don't you believe the Bible instead of believing Edward's??.

  13. While I am fascinated with Reformed thought, I still lean towards Catholic/Orthodox teachings regarding the Harrowing of Hell. Yes, it isn’t in the Bible explicitly, but I do not see any problem with it, nor did the Church for 1500 years.
