Lauren plays Hades #1: Introduction, Explanation, Early Runs (lore-focused!)

Hello! I like Greek mythology. You’re going to hear me talk about it a lot here. Interested to see what they choose to do with this, since they’re interpreting the pantheon as characters quite a bit differently than I would have expected. Still, I’m happy to go along for the ride. And gameplay? I actually think I’m going to be OK with this one, at least if these first few rooms are any indication.

Artemis is my #1 favorite and I like what they’ve done with her, at least.

Because this goes for YouTube chat as well as Twitch chat: please no spoilers, please no backseating, please do not point out the cool little details in the game because I JUST started playing it and presumably I will figure them out later and it will be more fun for everybody if I experience the game for myself instead of being told about it 🙂

  1. So! Watched this on twitch first because I was so enthusiastic to see your response to it, and I'm very glad that your urge for general property destruction can be satisfied in the game. Hooray!

Three things of note – you pointed out how, despite this game being very 'horny on main' re. character designs in general, Artemis isn't sexualized. I would argue neither is Athena. And they're not the only uneroticized/un-romanticized character designs in this game (although, I confess that is totally subjective). We'll all see more the further you get in.

I can understand you feeling an affinity with Artemis, given your reasoning. I guess of all the old pagan deities, I would say I feel an affinity to Sekhmet – there's something in the way her stories describes an anger that becomes almost… Gluttonous? Sometimes I feel anger that becomes a weird… hunger. Something that I could only find resonance in the stories of Sekhmet (or in Black Kali, but since she is part of a pantheon that is worshipped to this day, I don't feel it is quite appropriate for me to associate with her).

Finally, you being upset with Hades referring to Zag as a 'stupid boy', well, that brought up some mixed feelings in me, 'cause guess how I was referred to when my parents were upset with me, which led to decades of internalized self-aggression and a near-pathologic idea that I was only worthwhile by being in service to other people who were obviously more real than me because THEY weren't referred to as stupid! (Hint: c'est moi). So yeah! Parents, sometimes it is very important to communicate with your children what anger is, why people express it, and how it is possible for people to be angry at people and still love them, so that these children don't go through most of their lives thinking anger and hate are synonymous!

Wow. Sorry, that was a bit much. Looking forward to you doing more of this, I think you'll love the character interactions.

  2. Happy to see this 🙂 I hope you enjoy the lore and characters. It's amazingly written and very immersive.
Edit: Also I really like godmode being in the options, for people who prefer enjoying the writing. Reminds me of assist mode in Celeste and i wish more games had that design approach.

  3. The fact you take the time to explain and discuss and disect everything is exactly what differentiates you from let's players! 😀 There's a ton of streamers out there who will speed through the game, beat it on the highest difficulty, or react over-the-top to dramatic moments. But I particularly enjoy your streams (which I always end up watching after the fact instead of live…) because you truly digest everything that makes games and their messages special.

Keep on doing what you do! I look forward to hearing more of your insight on Hades! I've completed the game myself, but I'm always hungry to learn more about these myths.
