Game Description:

Hades is a god-like rogue-like dungeon crawler that combines the best aspects of Supergiant’s critically acclaimed titles, including the fast-paced action of Bastion, the rich atmosphere and depth of Transistor, and the character-driven storytelling of Pyre.

BATTLE OUT OF HELL
As the immortal Prince of the Underworld, you’ll wield the powers and mythic weapons of Olympus to break free from the clutches of the god of the dead himself, while growing stronger and unraveling more of the story with each unique escape attempt.

UNLEASH THE FURY OF OLYMPUS
The Olympians have your back! Meet Zeus, Athena, Poseidon, and many more, and choose from their dozens of powerful Boons that enhance your abilities. There are thousands of viable character builds to discover as you go.

BEFRIEND GODS, GHOSTS, AND MONSTERS
A fully-voiced cast of colorful, larger-than-life characters is waiting to meet you! Grow your relationships with them, and experience thousands of unique story events as you learn about what’s really at stake for this big, dysfunctional family.

BUILT FOR REPLAYABILITY
New surprises await each time you delve into the ever-shifting Underworld, whose guardian bosses will remember you. Use the powerful Mirror of Night to grow permanently stronger, and give yourself a leg up the next time you run away from home.

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE
Permanent upgrades mean you don’t have to be a god yourself to experience the exciting combat and gripping story. Though, if you happen to be one, crank up the challenge and get ready for some white-knuckle action that will put your well-practiced skills to the test.

SIGNATURE SUPERGIANT STYLE
The rich, atmospheric presentation and unique melding of gameplay and narrative that’s been core to Supergiant’s games is here in full force: spectacular hand-painted environments and a blood-pumping original score bring the Underworld to life.

  1. Hermes has different rules to all other gods. You can't snowball him. Game wants you to have at most 2 to 3 Boons from him per attempt. Game also tends to offer him in Asphodel and Elysium on regular and almost never in Tartarus. He also never takes primary slots.

Edit: 40:26 you were right. If game gives you a non-Hermes Boon, keepsake will force it to be god you want. But, like you've seen, it doesn't guarantee Boon to be offered as first room reward.

  2. Congrats on your first clear! It took me 19 runs so I think you did pretty well.

One nice little detail I noticed is that Persephone has green eyes, and Hades has red.

I'll be looking forward to this excellent game's return.

  3. 1:45 Backstabs (which deal bonus damage) do exist in general; the mirror upgrades make them stronger. However, some abilities cannot backstab (like the cast and most AOEs).
6:18 For the Aspect of Eris, "absorbing your Special's blast" means you get a damage buff when you stand within the blast area (getting "hit" by the explosion).
9:13 Hermes's boons can have higher rarity (he even has two legendary boons), but you're probably not seeing those because you're not focusing on him (also, his keepsake doesn't guarantee you'll find him, which also makes that harder).
40:02 Hermes is just a weird exception: his boons can show up even when you have another god's keepsake, but your "charge" on the keepsake is still retained (but it only guarantees you'll find a specific god once per run).
1:03:42 Pressure Points (+4% crit rate) counts for any kind of damage (including hangover and the homing arrows). Getting Artemis's aid at that point, however, would potentially give you access to the Splitting Headache duo boon later on (which gives +1.5% * 5 = 7.5% crit rate on enemies with 5 hangover stacks).

Also, congrats on getting the first ending! You did a pretty good job on planning a build, looking at boon requirements/options and switching the keepsakes accordingly (I'm sure that was a big part of the victory).

  4. Black Out doesn't mean they take more from Festive Fog. Festive Fog doesn't do any damage. It actually means what it says: Enemies in Festive Fog that also have Hangover take 60% more damage from all sources.
As for Curse of Nausea, the duo boon, it doesn't clear Hangover any faster. It just ticks every .35s instead of .5s but lasts the same amount of time, so it does more damage without having to be reapplied.
Hermes is a special case. You can essentially think of him more like Daedalus Hammers than god boons. He doesn't have main slot boons (Flurry Cast is NOT a cast slot boon), and you can only get a maximum of 3 from him in a run (Hammers are 2). He's basically not in the same RNG pool as the other gods, so he kinda ignores keepsakes.
43:56 Technically, you could have a Duo by your third boon. If you get one main slot from one god, another from a second god, and then get either of them again, bam: chance of Duo.
1:04:06 +200% is different from 200%. +200% means triple, not double. Otherwise your math was right; 4% chance to triple damage would be an overall 12% damage increase. And it is an overall damage increase because it applies to EVERYTHING. With Pressure Points, ALL DAMAGE has a chance to crit, even ticking DoTs.
1:06:15 Trippy Shot does not apply Hangover. It doesn't even do damage after the initial explosion. It just stuns periodically, which is why the Legendary specifies separately: Hangover-afflicted enemies in Festive Fog.
Zeus's lightning on attack does strike the initial target, as well as chaining to another. Not sure why you're talking about it, though, since it'd replace Hangover.
1:44:55 You are correct on both counts. With a single dodge, you have to iframe it. With the extra dodge from the mirror, which I have never played without once I got it, you can just run away.
End of run: Congrats! As it says in the upper right: The First Of Many? Yeah, the in-game timer doesn't count talking to gods, room transitions, buying stuff, the rooms between zones, fishing… My record is 26 minutes, the voice actor for Zagreus's record is 17 minutes, and I think the world records are like 13ish?

  5. It’s definitely fun to finally see a borderline op run, I know it’s a lot of gamble despite the skill element so I understand they’re few and far between until you’ve really ground buffs and modifiers

  6. Congratulations on your first win! I was using Exagryph the first time I beat Hades as well. I will be looking forward to whenever you decide to start the series again.

  7. Also, congrats! And enjoy the break!

And yes, I was the one who said that you can get 20 minute runs :p, and yes, that is in-game timer, which pauses when pondering over boons, reading dialog, and various other things which would be pretty unfair to time. Putting that in mind, I think 45-60 minute episodes are very much possible.

  8. Congrats on winning the first run! Regarding your question of run number, you eventually will gain access to a place that documents every run and includes past runs so you can find out which was your first successful escape attempt.

  9. Hermes is completely separate from the game's other gods, he works like an "other" room, his boon is not really considered as a "god boon".
And yeah, you can get more than one duo. The most i had was 3 but i don't know if there's a limit.

  10. Congrats on your first clear! I look forward to when you return to the game, as you haven't even seen a LARGE amount of the game's best aspects.

PS: This isn't remotely the "ending" point, so much as a "Chapter Clear!" There is a definite ending to be had, though. Up to you if you seek it out, of course.

  11. Congrats on winning the first run. I think your break is well earned. I just wish you had spoken to everyone in the house beforehand to see the consequences of your escape. If there are any.
I'm also curious how the relationship with Thanatos will develop. But i guess this has to wait until after your break.

  12. So, Hades is ultimate scumbag for hidding existence of his son from his mother.

Kinda glad we will kill him 9? more times,
kinda sad we will ever see him again.

  13. Personally I find the tooltip wording clear enough to indicate whether its a passive or becomes your attack, but I think they didn't bother with making it ultra-specified because replacing boons isn't that bad, you pick whatever you like on a case by case basis anyway and if you find a better attack boon you like later on its still a direct rarity upgrade.

    >Didn't that hit you after the fight was over
Iirc all damage gets muted once you finish that encounter, so you don't actually have to dodge the mines, bombs, traps targeting you once the reward spawns.

    >I wish it tells you each [Redacted]
    Supergiant got you covered again.

    >The implications
Oh yeah, cranked the imagination and anxiety up to 11 after hearing Hades whole "You don't know cruelty boy" rant.

  14. Nice! I started at about the same time as this series, it took me 43 runs to get my first clear, I'm now at 58 runs and just got my 10th clear. You should definitely go for at least 10 clears eventually as well, there is a lot of interesting new content left.

  15. Since you haven't really been dying frequently, you might switch back to death defiance. I tend to die several times during the final fight, and have even blown through a full stack of defiances, to end up with a win. When you pick this game back up, it might be something to keep in mind

  16. Persephone is Demeter's daughter and hades husband in the myths. she lives half the year in the underworld with hades and during that time Demeter is sad and causes winter and autumn. and then the other half of the year Persephone lives on the surface with the rest of the gods and Demeter is happy so we have spring and summer.

  17. Speaking of Nioh, with the PC release of Nioh 2 coming up next month do you think we're getting close to you finally getting an opportunity to play it? It's such an incredible game, and so vastly improved over the first Nioh. I've been very eager to see you play it and I figure the PC release, with all the DLC out already and all the balance patches in from the beginning, would be the perfect time for it if there's room in your schedule.

  18. Legend tells of a day when the planets will all align, the Earth's magnetic poles will become reversed, the oceans will rise and Keith will stop calling Artemis "Athena "and Athena "Artemis".

  19. Certainly some interesting stuff going on with this game, and I'm glad I got to play through it when I had time (though it took me WAY longer to break out then you did – embarrassingly so). I look forward to it maybe coming back eventually for the rest!

FWIW – Zagreus is technically a figure in Greek mythology, though his actual place is ambiguous. Numerous sources do link him back to Persephone, but his exact parentage or relation got really muddled up in retellings. He's either her son (via Zeus or Hades), or her… uncle, I think? Via Chronos (and either the figure that gave inspiration for Dionysus later or just another persona of Zeus). The first is more common then the latter. Older and less common figures in Greek mythology tend to not be as solidly codified, a problem not uncommon with ancient mythology in general really.

The only real truth is that Cerberus is the best boy ever and deserves ALL the headpats.

  20. Congratulations on clearing your first run! So fast, and with a wild Exagryph build no less. For reference, it took me 31 runs to get my first clear (with the Shield) and I had to use 2 stacked Death Defies. Needless to say, you're doing pretty great (or I'm just not that skilled haha).
Can't wait for this series to return – oh and also, one of the decorations you can put into Zagreus' room show you the amount of runs you have made overall, and even later on you will have another place to look into more detailed cleared runs.

  21. so the duo boons (you can see the requirements in the codex), just require you have one from each list. then there is a low chance either god can give you the duo boon after that
