Every winter, Demeter the Earth Mother cries because her daughter Persephone has been taken to the Underworld. The Earth becomes cold and life becomes harsh. When spring comes, Hades must release Persephone back to Demeter. The Earth brightens and blooms, and we experience the joys of summer. While Demeter celebrates, Hades is now the one who cries, waiting for Persephone to return to him.
