  1. One my fav times about hades is it take a cute cuddly spin on Cerberus cause mostly that dude is almost any Greece or fantasy just generic cannon fodder monster but it’s one I just want to pet the doggy so much in the underworld

  2. I've never had a roguelike/roguelite I've liked. The punishing, repetitive grind and high learning curve was just not for me. I'm a big baby and I need a lot more rewards to go with my smackdowns. Hades was sold to me as the roguelike for people who hate roguelikes, and boy was that correct! It took me 33 hours to finally clear a run, and I can't say I would have put that time into, say, Binding of Issac. The characters, the fun, the interstitial moments are great, but also there's always reasons beyond completing a run to do a run. I've thrown myself into the underworld just hoping to see Patroclus again, or to get more gems, or more nectar… it's exactly the sort of reward heavy incentive a very impatient gamer like myself needs. Plus, I almost always felt like I was improving with each run. Almost all my first time clears were basically surprises for me, sudden and serendipitous events the first time, only to become mostly consistent within the next few times. I SUCK at video games, but this game has taught even me to be good at it.

Anyway 10/10 I love this dating sim fishing game.

  3. Also important to note that not only does he completely kill it with his performance as zag, but Darren Korb did pretty much all of the music. Dude put so much talent on his back and carried it thru like a champ.

  4. My favorite thing about this game is it’s a true evolution in game design through story telling. The way the story progresses in this game can’t be done in any other genre, the roguelike. A genre that traditionally has to be light on story because of the nature of the beast where one of its defining factors is dying constantly and starting over from the beginning. It’s hard to make a story that doesn’t feel sparse when beating the game takes forever to do but once you do get a handle on the game, it can be “beaten” in 30 minutes. The fact they combined roguelike into a big sprawling story that unfolded in an organic way, at a satisfying pace, in a genre that is in direct opposition to normal story telling makes this game so amazing to me.

  5. Hi, it's me, the guy who doesn't like roguelikes but still is enjoying Hades – I think one big thing for me is that the number of options you've got to work with is so much more limited than something like Binding of Isaac, where I just get overwhelmed by the number of weapons and items that you need to memorise in order to build up a strategy. Getting something that does DoT and going "Right, I'll make sure the next thing I get works with that" is a lot better than going "Right, this combo of Cat Head, AIDS needle and Used Condom is working well, time to pick up this Chocolate Milk and… aww fuck, I forgot that's what it does! Well, that's this run ruined."

  6. I had never played a Roguelike before Hades. A few runs later and I couldn't stop until I saw the epilogue. Hades is not just the best game of 2020 for me, it might be the best game of the generation.

And this is coming from a massive devil may cry fan.

  7. Although I generally think over-hyping video games can be poisonous, Hades is one of those games in a long time where I'm like: "Yes! Sing this game's praises for all to hear!" With all the heart and soul the studio put into this game as well as all past Supergiant games, everyone involved deserve nothing but success for building such a modern masterpiece on a scale that just about anyone with an ounce of good taste can appreciate.

  8. I stayed up til almost 5 AM the other night playing this, telling myself “Oh I’ll stop at Asphodel, just get my build going” multiple times. A true gem of a game in every aspect.

  9. I love this game not only because of the reasons Matt presents here and all other reviewers/streamers mentioned, but also because it greatly helped me have a bigger grasp on english as a language, and that as a non-native speaker, makes the experience so much more compelling and productive on a whole other level. It was almost like I was a kid again, learning my first english words and sentences by spending hours on a real gem of a game.

  10. I personally like this game so much. This and Pyre are now my favorite Super Giant game out of all of them. Each run feels as if you gain something at the end, and each death is not a toss away. This is the game that got me into liking rougelike games.

  11. This game is tons of fun. For such a short game I really poured a shit ton of hours into it I think last I checked I had like 80 hours in it.

Haven't played it for quite some time since Valhalla came out but I can seriously say like this is a worthwhile purchase. It's one of those games where I pirated it based on all the positive praise it was getting from other people that pirated it, then liked it so much that I went and bought it after I already beat it like ten times because it was obvious the developer earned my money.

    Seriously check this game out.

  12. i literally picked up hades because i stumbled upon your "best games of 2019" video months ago and immediatly fell in love with what i saw! i'm a sucker for a bright, detailed art style and hot gods, so it seemed pretty much to be tailor made for me… but OH BOY, i wasn't expecting it to crawl so easily into my top 5 games of ALL TIME. everything about hades is just so fucking good and crafted with love that it oozes perfection and care from every. single. frame! thank you so much, matt and we gotta stan supergiant games forever ♥ also thanatos is the love of my life i'm obsessed

  13. You should really keep this up. Seeing you break down "Wha Happun?" to games is great and all, but I always appreciated the hype and excitement you have for certain games. So "Why I Like The Thing" sounds perfect

  14. Alright, I'm not generally a roguelike guy, and I was experiencing some hype aversion, but this has actually convinced me. Downloading that bad boy right now. Here's hoping it lives up.

Update: Holy fuck, does it live up

  15. Okay, so I haven't heard much specifics about Hades until this video, but the gameplay loop sounds borderline evil. So, you die and get into this castle full of fun NPCs, right? And they react to whatever you did in the dungeon, right? So if you finish a run, you can't just close the game right there, you feel like you can listen to some dialogue while the events of the run are still fresh on your mind. And then these dialogues make your next run better, so you want to check it out right away, and before you realize it, you spent like 5 hours on the game. If I got everything right, I'm kinda scared of buying it.

  16. Darren Korb is not only the voice of Zagreus (the protagonist, the guy who has the most lines of dialogue in the game) and Skelly
He also is the songwriter and composer for all ingame soundtrack. All songs of which are total bangers.
This is so much work, oh my god

Also he is the voice of Orpheus singing

  17. The fact that this indie game (and all of supergiant's games for that matter) with such a small team manages to have such consistently good writing and especially great voice acting puts the majority of modern AAA games to shame.

  18. I'd never even heard of roguelikes before picking up Hades. Tbh my main motivation on getting it was the incredible art style. The fact that the voice acting and story are top notch makes me really glad i bought the game.

Im glad you decided to go so in depth on this review! Not enough people on yt are talking about this gem.

  19. Hades is an excellent example of a developer keeping an arguably complete game in Early Access to get feedback from the players to refine, tinker, and expand. It’s a new development paradigm that works especially well with roguelikes.

  20. So glad I found this video. Matt I love your scripted videos and that you try new and different ideas. While Wha Happun stands out with the thumbnails, sometimes new video ideas just get blended into the Let’s Plays and get looked over. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who missed this, and probably strong thumbnails, clear titling, and maybe even using the Premier function for these scripted videos to build up hype and attention would help. Love the channel, thanks a lot!
