In this video, we explore the famous myth of Hades and Persephone, the god and goddess of the Underworld. Did Hades kidnap Persephone, or did she fall in love with him? Was their relationship a case of Stockholm syndrome, or was it mythology’s greatest love affair?
We’ll also learn about the role of the myth in Ancient Greek culture, and why Persephone almost caused a Nymph to go into an eternal sleep. Hades (aka Pluto) was also the God of the Dead, being given the domain of the underworld after the Titanomachy. We’ll explain about Demeter – the goddess of the harvest and the mother of Persephone and the role Zeus played in his daughter’s abduction.
“There, in front [of the ends of the earth], stand the echoing halls of the god of the lower-world, strong Hades, and of awful Persephone” – Hesiod’s Theogony
