Red hasn't done specific videos on Hera and Zeus, but they come up often enough in her videos on Greek Mythology. She has done specific videos on Hades & Persephone, Hermes, Aphrodite, Dionisius, and just recently released a video on Artemis & Apollo.
I love how surprised you are every time FGO does something with historical/mythologies backing.
Since you asked if Red has ever done a 40k video; no but in her Trope Talk episode on 'Grimdark' she does talk about it a bit, running down the major factions and confirming that she herself is an Eldar player
Its amusing that 5/10 times I get an FGO ad on these.
The Pele video was actually the very 1st of their videos I’d ever seen. It was back when Moana came out and I got interested in Polynesian folklore. Eventually, I watched more videos. I think the Dracula video was either the 2nd video OR just among the earliest videos I watched after Pele.
Also, I’d say the Kupua are more like the Eternals (*god-tier humans*) than the Mutants.
Also, that Reef Triggerfish Kamapua’a (*which means “Pig-Child”*) turns into is the Hawaiian state fish, a.k.a. Humuhumu-Nukunuku-A-Puaʻa (*and yes, I can actually say that from memory and it’s just so fun to say 😅*). He’s kinda well-known for his shapeshifting abilities and being a bit of trickster. He’s been a normal man, an 8-eyed boar-man, an 8-eyed boar, the aforementioned Reef Triggerfish, and a Kukui tree. The meaning of his name and his hog-based forms are relevant to his birth. His mom had an affair with her husband’s younger brother and Kamapua’a popped out essentially looking like an 8-eyed piglet. The technical stepdad wasn’t too happy about that and proceeded to make the kid’s life miserable. And now you see where the daddy issues and trickster personality came from.

It seems the video skipped here.
It's amazing how metal some of these gods are when they come from cultures and/or time periods that didn't even know what metal was, figuratively or literally.
For me people++ mean Primarchs at this point. Take it or leave it.
Supposedly, when Theseus was rescued by Heracles, a chunk of his butt-cheeks remained stuck to the chair, so he and his descendants were flat-assed forever after.
4:30 Actually, they still hated it. Back then, daughters were kidnapped by random people, and mothers were heavily distraught about it. I'm talking tying-the-noose and not having kids so that they wouldn't have to live in this hell type distraught. So, this story served as a comfort for these mothers that might have never seen their daughters ever again. This story was supposed to say that the mothers could still do something, that there was hope. That's a massive reason why people hate Lore Olympus nowadays; they portrayed this as a forbidden Romeo-&-Juliet type romance, and Demeter as this controlling bitch.
I mean, hell, you two gave Thesies and Perethus flack for kidnapping Helen.
10:16 I know my other comment might make me seem a little buased, but is anyone else noticing how many fallacies Red is getting into. Like, this is so clearly the bandwagon fallacy, the udea that something is perfectly fine/right just because a lot of people are doing it.
Ok! I have studied Aztec mythology and I gotta tell you there is SO much more to it than just Human Sacrifices. I realized sometime around highschool that I couldn't think of anything I really knew about Aztec myths and media about it is very often untrustworthy because they generally make it as bloody and exotic as possible to represent it in contrast to what characters are typically familiar with. So I started doing my own research and found that Aztec mythology is really interesting!
There was a running theme in Aztec myths of Duality and Cycles of Creation and Destruction. The Gods originated from a being called Ometeotl the Deity of Duality who is basically like a personified Mexican Yin and Yang that's half Male and Female who then has 4 children called collectively The Tezcatlipoca, although only 1 of them is actually named Tezcatlipoca. They are Tezcatlipoca The Black
Quetzalcoatl The White Tezcatlipoca
Huitzilopochtli The Blue Tezcatlipoca
and Xipe Totec The Red Tezcatlipoca
(Yes this story conflicts a little with the Coatlicue story, don't worry this is not the only time these gods are given a birth story, in fact rather than a bug it's a feature with Quetzalcoatl as being reborn over and over is just something he does.)
Just focusing on Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl they prime examples of Duality and specifically Conflict vs Community
Quetzalcoatl is pretty much the nicest and most personable of the Aztec Gods, he created humanity by giving us some of his own blood, he constantly looks out for the wellbeing of humanity teaching humans Agriculture, Astronomy, Math, Writing, etc, he gave humanity gifts like music and Chocolate, and he's a patron of the arts and artisanship encouraging bringing people together, creating, trading, learning from each other, and building up peace and prosperity.
(Also I almost forgot to mention, Quetzalcoatl is the most notable aztec god who's worship did not involve of Human Sacrifices, and Quetzalcoatl was said to not approve of the practice at all. His worship mainly consisted of small offerings of Food, Sea Shells, and Cocoa beans)
Tezcatlipoca is a constant problem for everybody in Aztec Mythology. The moment everything seems like nothing bad could possibly happen Tezcatlipoca always shows up to ruin the fun and specifically has a rivalry with Quetzalcoatl. I'll let you see some of his hijinks yourself in the 5 Suns myth…
I don’t think you’ve reacted to Red’s Hades and Persephone video, but it’s one of my favorite OSP videos! Highly recommend
Speaking of Pele, here's an interesting story my dad told me from his early Army days.
One of his early duty stations (maybe his first, iirc), was at Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu. One weekend, he and a buddy wanted to go hiking up the side of the mountain, and they ended up getting lost in the forests. They were looking for a landmark to make their way back, when one of them saw a white dog off in the distance. Now, some of you familiar with Hawaiian mythology probably already see where this story is going at this point.
So they decide this dog probably got out of someone's backyard, and if they follow it, it will lead them to a residential area and, from there, they could get their bearings and make their way back to base. The dog led them through the woods and they came out along a stretch of highway they were familiar with; they knew if they followed it, they'd get back. But there were also no houses nearby that the dog could have come from. They looked around, and the dog was no where to be seen; it had seemingly just up and vanished.
So, years later, my dad met up with that friend again and, while talking, the topic of this encounter with the dog in the forest came up. And the friend said he had researched it later and found out about one of the myths about Pele in Hawaiian stories. Depending on the story, she either has, or herself appears as, a white dog. This dog will lead good-hearted travelers who get lost on the volcano to a safe place. And a mysterious white dog appeared out of nowhere, seemingly near no residential area, lead them out of the forest, and then just pulled a Batman and vanished without a trace when their backs were turned. Kinda makes you wonder…
Funny thing about the brutality of Aztec Mythology:
You could take Warhammer Fantasy, replace the gods, location, weapons, units and aesthetic with an Aztec equivalent, and the only two differences you could notice is a lower grade of technological development and more deities. And just ONE blood god? Weak sauce.
Side note with Hades: Red's depiction of him is half-right. True, he was a loving husband, caring father and doting dog owner (y'know, classic dad stuff), but two phrases that don't describe him are "Mild-Mannered" and "Bleeding Heart." In fact, "Stoic" and "Hardass" fit more accurately. He was a stickler for the rules of Life and Death, rarely bragged about anything, and was so stone-faced that Orpheus was the only person that could get him to shed even one single tear. Epictetus, Aristotle, and the Five Emperors of the Pax Romana WISH they were as Stoic as this guy. Supergiant's HADES was actually pretty on-point, even how ge will fight you if you try to escape. He wasn't evil though, since he's also honorable, honest, a fair and decent boss and Greece's first sugar daddy. No joke: he's literally the richest god in the Pantheon (at least until that other God of Wealth showed up) because, as king of the Underworld, EVERYTHING under the earth was technically his. Except for Pearls, because of Poseidon.
I'm sorry, Airier, but she has not yet done deep dives on either Zeus or Hera, though both do feature in a lot of myths (obviously).
@12:10 so Grey-romantic/grey-sexual means that they don't always feel romantic or sexual attraction. On both the ace and aro flags, they have white (experiences attraction regularly), grey, and black (no attraction, period) stripes to help represent this. Grey is just meant to show that it's in the middle of a spectrum.
@18:14 Ailau flips out because Pele is spiritually more powerful than he is. It is actually not unheard of for women to be more powerful then men in Hawaiian belief. Keōpūolani had more power than her husband, King Kamehameha I, meaning he had to remove his malo in deference to her, according to traditional beliefs, never mind the political power she and Ka'ahumanu (another of Kamehameha's wives) had.
@20:44 Yes, there's a glacier in Hawaii. 3 of the mountains are high enough to get snow fall and the occasional blizzard. Honestly, the only state in the US that doesn't get snow is Florida, not Hawaii. The tallest mountain, Mauna Kea (which is actually taller than Mt Everest, just most of it is underwater) is literally named after its snow (White Mountain is the name in English). Also Hawaii is not on the equator, the main islands are just a bit south of the Tropic of Cancer (which is 23.4 degrees above the equator, or 1,621.5 miles), putting the islands in the Tropics. But most of the North-West Hawaiian Islands are not in the tropics.
@21:14 Yes, Lava sledding. You sled on long cold lava flows, not active lava. I sadly have never done it, but I've had plenty of classmates who have. Most likely it's done on pahoihoi lava, as that's the smoother of the two kinds you get with shield volcanoes, which are what make up most of Hawaii. Airier actually was correct on how the islands formed, which I'm impressed by. Most don't know about it.
For my sources: I am Aro-Ace, and I grew up in Hawaii (on Oahu). And yes, you don't piss off Madame Pele if you want to have a good time. Red actually has some of the better pronunciations of Hawaiian words I've heard of from someone who hasn't lived in the islands.
Yeah, I honestly get annoyed by the amount of "Fate isn't mythology accurate!" bullshit that gets thrown its way. At least you admit to not knowing the lore.
9:07 also, when Heracles ripped Theseus off the chair the man’s butt cheeks stayed fused to it.😂😂😂
11:00 actually that myth is not accurate, it’s just EVERYWHERE, and this video was back when Red didn’t do as thorough research on things. In the later Orion video she made she found that there are more myths about her “deleting” Orion. One myth involving that subject was when he was pursuing her friends the Pleiades, which is the name of a star cluster near the constellation Orion and how they, plus the constellation Scorpio (which represents the scorpion Artemis sent to “delete” Orion), were used to delineate certain times of the year.
A really cool set of shorts using Aztec mythology I stumbled upon was called "See No Evil"
I mean, apart from the genderbents (which in Saber's case wasn't without historical pretext), unless they make the effort to rewrite the story themselves, they usually stick fairly close to the actual mythology, except for the addition of fate concepts.
Thanks for this reaction. (I look forward to you getting to Dread Persephone. )
I hesitate to mention it, but Baldermort (of 40K) has some great dramatic videos on Hades and Hera, though unlike OSP, he sticks to one mythological version and goes all in on the drama, rather than highlighting differing historical versions.
Considering after death you will be in his domain forever… yeah don't piss off Hades. XD
Speaking of FGO – you know how Artemis (Orion) is depicted as having… huge tracts of land? Yeah, look up the nymph Aura, who actually, stupidly told Artemis, to her face, that there was no possible way she could be a virgin goddess with her body. In fact, she directly compares her breasts to those of a pregnant woman.
Suffice to say, bad things happened to that nymph…
How to piss off the most mild- mannered and bureaucratic of the Greek gods:
Conspire to kidnap the one thing he loves more than both his job and his dog combined!
12:35 I had a gf who identified herself as that. Its basically a very overly verbose way of saying "i dont get fealings for people i dont know for a while"
The etymology kind of makes anything not a doggo in media named "Cerberus" hilarious.
Wait, you didn't know about the whole Cerberus means Spot thing? I've known that For a like nearly a decade
You should probably watch the story of Artemis and Orion
My goodness, are Dogs evil in Aztec culture 😮
The thing about the glacier in Hawaii is that it would have formed a very long time ago. Think ice age. And while Hawaii is on a hotspot the sheer altitude of the mountain may have somewhat negated that. Plus it’s possible that it was formed at a time when the volcano just wasn’t very active. So it’s really weird but makes sense in the same way that deserts once being underwater makes sense. Time changes all things.
Considering it looks like Red designed Theseus and Pirithous on Bill and Ted (of the Excellent Adventures), you're not wrong about the surfer dude accent.
Yeah, no, Hawaii is not on the equator at all. It is definitely far to the north of it.
Hades be like: "I don't usually stir shit up or go full Zeus or Hera, but they had the gall to come all the way with the express and clear intent to kidnap my wife… and that is where I draw the line."
guess what and actual name used for hades was… "Dark Zeus" because while you can worship a god of the dead you generally don't want there attention by saying there name
5:15 yeah Dresden Files also pointed that out
If you think about it all the Greek gods they live for the life of sweet Alabama
11:13 the fact that the Orion video literally discredits the Orion x Artemus ship later.
3:24 random content cut?
hey Airier , this is 13 hours after upload, but, given you're doing an aztec myth video, i figured i'd take the chance to ask: i don't know how you select what videos you're gonna react to, but i wanted to suggest "5 FUN facts about spanish COLONIZATION" by DJPeachCobbler
it's the lead up to a multi part series that currently has two parts, but i think will have a third, maaayybe a fourth.
if you consider it, thanks!
Noo, the part of Orion was added yes after the original myth changing Artemis characterisation because someone liked that ship.
Originally Orion and Artemis were just pals who liked to compere with the other, they were just friends and that's it
Any mountain can have a glacier if it's tall enough.
To give you a comparison, both Mount Everest and Florida are at the same latitude ( roughly 29° North) but while one is Uber hot, the other one is a frozen ice box.
I don't think you realize just how massive and tall Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are. From base (at seafloor) to peak they each dwarf Mt. Everest. In terms of total volume…dude, the crust beneath the island of Hawaii actually forms a significant depression because of the weight of the volcanoes! Kilauea is the third (and most active) of the volcanoes on the Big Island but there is actually a fourth volcano people don't know about because it rarely erupts and also because a major hotel resort was built right on top of it. This fourth volcano also tends to have Mt. St. Helens style explosive eruptions, so that's going to be a fun day when it wakes up again. There is also the seamount just offshore from Kilauea. One day it will have grown enough to connect to the Big Island making it even bigger bringing the grand total of volcanic conduits on the island up to five!
My reason for knowing all this? I just like geology and I find volcanoes to be fascinating. I can never remember volcano number 4's name and am too lazy right now to look it up. But the USGS knows its there and monitors it along with all the other dormant volcanoes in the States and territories. They're pretty good about getting warnings out before anything actually dangerous happens, but…people don't always listen…and then they get blamed when people die…even though they were warned to STAY AWAY FROM KILLER MOUNTAIN! Sorry. Pet peeve.
So basically the Aztecs believed in the Emperor who shines the light of the ~~Astranomican~~ sun to guide humanity, and needs human sacrifices to keep doing so…
Heyy… I think you should continue the Fan Made Rwby trailer… The SLVR one….
You should see the one where Loki turned into a seal
You should keep the singing in the video. Her voice is lovely and the extra info she includes is great.
