Hades is the Greek god of the underworld and the dead, and one of the twelve Olympian gods. He is the brother of Zeus and Poseidon, and together they defeated the Titans, dividing the realms among them. Hades received the underworld, and while he was a feared god, he was not considered evil. One of the most famous myths involving Hades is the story of the abduction of Persephone, the daughter of Demeter. Hades kidnapped her to be his wife, and as a result, Demeter caused the earth to become barren. Eventually, a compromise was reached, and Persephone was allowed to return to her mother for part of the year, marking the cycle of the seasons.
