He is also accompanied by a three-headed dog, who watches over newborns, predicts their future, and sees their eventual end.
Hades was once smitten with Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, the goddess of earth and fertility. Despite her father’s objections, Hades kidnapped Persephone and brought her to the underworld. This caused great sadness for Demeter, who was so distraught that she stopped ruling the seasons and the earth fell into chaos.
Zeus intervened and scolded Demeter, telling her to do her duties and that he would bring Persephone back. Knowing that Hades was fond of the lyre, Zeus traded the lyre for Persephone’s release.
