Game Description:
Hades is a god-like rogue-like dungeon crawler that combines the best aspects of Supergiant’s critically acclaimed titles, including the fast-paced action of Bastion, the rich atmosphere and depth of Transistor, and the character-driven storytelling of Pyre.
BATTLE OUT OF HELL
As the immortal Prince of the Underworld, you’ll wield the powers and mythic weapons of Olympus to break free from the clutches of the god of the dead himself, while growing stronger and unraveling more of the story with each unique escape attempt.
UNLEASH THE FURY OF OLYMPUS
The Olympians have your back! Meet Zeus, Athena, Poseidon, and many more, and choose from their dozens of powerful Boons that enhance your abilities. There are thousands of viable character builds to discover as you go.
BEFRIEND GODS, GHOSTS, AND MONSTERS
A fully-voiced cast of colorful, larger-than-life characters is waiting to meet you! Grow your relationships with them, and experience thousands of unique story events as you learn about what’s really at stake for this big, dysfunctional family.
BUILT FOR REPLAYABILITY
New surprises await each time you delve into the ever-shifting Underworld, whose guardian bosses will remember you. Use the powerful Mirror of Night to grow permanently stronger, and give yourself a leg up the next time you run away from home.
NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE
Permanent upgrades mean you don’t have to be a god yourself to experience the exciting combat and gripping story. Though, if you happen to be one, crank up the challenge and get ready for some white-knuckle action that will put your well-practiced skills to the test.
SIGNATURE SUPERGIANT STYLE
The rich, atmospheric presentation and unique melding of gameplay and narrative that’s been core to Supergiant’s games is here in full force: spectacular hand-painted environments and a blood-pumping original score bring the Underworld to life.

9:53 Yep, "wanton ransacking" is a quest for defeating every mini-boss (they appear in boon rooms with a skull icon).
10:51 Fishing is definitely worth it, btw: you can trade the fish you catch with the chef for different items (including bounties, depending on the fish). Fishing spots can appear in any zone with some kind of water/magma in it, and will be marked by a chime noise (and sometimes a voice line by Zagreus) after you defeat the enemies within and grab the reward. You need to reel the bobber in when the screen flashes above it.
40:14 In Greek mythology, gods have ichor flowing through their veins (different sources say it's either blue or gold).
1:04:40 You only get a bounty (blood, diamonds or ambrosias) when you defeat each boss with each weapon on each difficulty ("heat") level. Change either the weapon or the difficulty level (the latter will be unlocked after you finish the game) and you'll be able to collect bounties again.
Ah, weapons of the ancient Greeks.
The sword.
The spear.
The shield.
The bow.
Punching.
The machine gun in the shape of a motorcycle.
Base gun is the worst and my most hated weapon, in my opinion, but the upgraded guns are light-years better than the base.
Regarding the tension between Artemis and Aphrodite at 1:26:30. Artemis is the goddess of a bunch of stuff, among which she is the goddess of chastity. So the goddess of doing it and the goddess of explicitly not doing it are not the best of friends lol
I'm 36 runs in. I've made it to the surface like 3 maybe 4 times. You are destroying this game! I also have tried your slow and steady approach and it has got me surprisingly far consistently
I love that one shade whos your fan, Zag always makes sure to give them a shoutout it’s cute, and also my motivation to keep beating Theseus to please to please Zagreus’ fan, and eventually realize Theseus always turns around after throwing his spear.
The rail is the most power weapon in the game and the choice of speedrunners. Current record for defeating everything up to and including hades is under 8 mins Mr 2 hrs 🙂 Dont forget to spend some time looking through the codex at all the boons each god offers. Helps to plan out your runs a bit using keepsakes rather than depend on RNjesus.
Particle effects: the episode
40:23 The gods bleed golden ichor. Zagraeus, the god of blood, bleeds red.
Boldly is a character that you can give nectar to
49:38 Pretty sure you still have back attacks turned off.
1:43:20 So their explanation for you having a machine gun in ancient Greece is that the gods invented it first, and it hasn't been copied by mortal inspiration… yet.
1:51:59 exactly: That flash is when you're supposed to press the button, not the random decoy bobs.
I always feel like the Rail is my worst weapon and that I'm floundering like a jackass, only to look at the stats and realize it's by FAR my best weapon. After a while it just clicked for me, and I think a part of that is just learning how its autoaim worked, and what kinds of boons make it really good. But yeah, anything that's on hit: Zeus, Dionysus, Demeter… really stacks up amazingly well with the gun.
Its base ammo is just what sucks, but, well, there's ways around that, later.
3:10 Yeah, it is possible (but super difficult) to beat the game on your first attempt. There’s even a speedrun category for it.
11:24 Perfect timing.
He still hasn't figured out that the unique boss drops are for each time you beat them with a new weapon, even though it tells you at the top of the screen every time you pick one up.
Really poor Boon choices here. Not sure what advice to give; it would seem you give your decisions due consideration, but you often come to the wrong conclusion. Support Fire, Chain Lightning, and Heart Rend may well have put you over the edge. Ah well. Next time. Happy new year.
if you’re interest in the story of Hades and those individual character arcs n moments you can have with the people in them, then i’d highly recommend to not ignore the cosmetic upgrades to the house (there are in fact even arcs that are linked specifically to renovating n you’d never encounter or resolve those without it)
but dont worry, you dont have to buy everything. you’ll notice very quickly what works the more you play around with the house contractor
little pro tip for the hypnos coin purse-
you can also equip it right before styx (aka the last gauntlet area) if you’re a little short of money to buy stuff there 😉
I’m actually not sure what hit you at 2:07:45
Could anyone explain?
I just don't love going for high speed/low base DPS in games like this. That's why the Gauntlets and Exagryph just don't do it for me. Especially with hoe Exagryph just turns into the dodge spam weapon in MOST builds. I much prefer the triple Spear for DPS or Sword for chunking. More satisfying, imo.
Exagryph is a weapon you either build for special spam or go into synergy effects for the quick auto attack. Of course thats impossible to know on your first trial, so good effort.
Fishing is kind of tricky. You need to press just when it goes underwater, but it also does a couple fakeouts were it only shortly goes beyond water. When the real one happens it flashes a little bit, so that's your cue to press. Theres also a little ding when you finish an encounter in a room with a fishing spot, so listen for that.
A tip – when Alecto does this attack when she spins in the air and follows you, spawning red circles beneath your feet, she is super easy to safely lead into those traps on sides of the pillars. Each trap deals 100 damage to her. I am willing to bet this is how I get through half her health bar these fights since it's so simple I do it by accident. You did too, for a moment near the end.
When you fish, you press it when it fully submerges. It usually does a few fake out short dips beforehand, but not always. In Styx it didn't do that for instance – first dip it did was that strong dip with a splash you are looking for. Also, fishing points, when they unlock after you collect room reward, make a "ding" sound, like a small bell. If you remember to listen for it, you will always know if there is one in the chamber.
If enemy has a Marked curse on it, every attack can crit.
Diamonds, Ambrosia and Titan Blood drop from a boss each time you beat it with a new weapon. Form of the boss doesn't matter for this. In that sense, yes, they are progression locked, but next time you come over with Exagryph, they will give you darkness again instead. Question mark on your gun icon you noticed represents exactly that – you have not beaten this boss before with this weapon.
I think you hurt yourself a lot more than you realized getting rid of the Duo Boon. I've noticed gamers in general make the mistake of grossly undervaluing anything based around random chance. It would be a good idea to learn from their mistake 🙂 Embrace the random.
Otherwise, you're doing pretty well, Keith. Theseus and Asterius and Hades himself are common roadblocks for new players and you're making progress on them very quickly.
"Does Zeus just shoot wherever he feels like?"
Well it sure sounds like Zeus alright.
We are all soldiers now…
I miss the Overwatch stuff… are you having a break from the game? or the schedule is really busy right now?
I find Exagryph to be the swingiest among the weapons, it can peak insanely high being the fastest weapon, but it is also the only weapon whose vanilla attack doesn't stagger, and I think has the lowest dps.
Fishing has fake-outs to discourage twitch reflexes but the quicker you reel the better fishies you get.
Rooms with fishing spots will notify you with a ding when you finished that room, so you dont have to paranoically comb every pixel before you leave.
Imagine if the last phase was butterflies
I think the meat is always in the third door you find. You could build your strategy based on that.
Very good run attempt! You made a number of uninformed bad choices, but your gameplay is good (especially considering you are playing while making commentary, much more difficult than many people realize). It took me 30 tries before my first Hades victory. I think you'll probably get there far before that. Thanks for the very entertaining content!
You are one of the only people I have seen that noticed that Hades "beard" is in the shape of his own symbol, though its actually not a beard at all. Its actually all moustache, from top to tips.
I know this is completely off topic, but are you going to play Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity?
Replace "death defiance" with the normal version. At max level, you will have 3 charges. So if you play it right (and patrokles can restore them) you get to Hades have 3 strong revives instead of 1 shitty.
the rail's main damage comes from the special until you get enough upgrades for the attack to do work
1:03:00 your special crit because of hunter's mark boon
seeking arrow is super strong with your rail guns main attack, it more than doubles its damage. and with cluster bomb, it would have fired an absurd number of arrows each time
for fishing press the button when the bob glows with a circle
aphrodite also has an increase damage to weak boon
49:34 It seems Keith forgot that backstabs are gained from the mirror and he swapped them off
