โ–บ Hades 1.0 Full Release Story Synopsis

Hades is a god-like rogue-like dungeon crawler that combines the best aspects of Supergiantโ€™s critically acclaimed titles, including the fast-paced action of Bastion, the rich atmosphere and depth of Transistor, and the character-driven storytelling of Pyre.

As the immortal Prince of the Underworld, youโ€™ll wield the powers and mythic weapons of Olympus to break free from the clutches of the god of the dead himself, while growing stronger and unraveling more of the story with each unique escape attempt.

  1. Oh my god I've literally played this game for 60 hours and JUST NOW noticed the symbol on the coins isn't an… exclamation mark… lmao. I knew I would learn something new by watching Welonz play XD

  2. 23:20 heh, story of my life, that quote.
    47:07
47:50 you have your choice of EVERY attack inflicting an extra 70% plus weakness… or enemies doing damage once, when they die, only if other enemies are close enough. It makes slight sense with the bow, since you "Attack" less often. In the greater scheme of things…?

or maybe I'm misreading something. Backseat gaming is like that :p

~53:00 I think the heart does come with some health recovery – i.e. the amount that it increases HP is all "full hearts", a heal.

Seems like you can't return to previous rooms during a run?

  3. While you might think that because of your lack of experience in the genre, your videos of this game will be less interesting, valuable or useful, that is not really true. While indeed you are incapable of providing expert commentary or insight of somebody who breathes the genre, it actually opens up equally powerful alternative – you can show this game (and the genre) through the untrained eye of somebody who is in it casually. This is pretty informative, educational and useful, especially for people crafting interactive experiences (such as games). It is kinda how opinion of a person who can't draw at all and doesn't understand the process behind making art is very valuable and desired, exactly because it is uniquely different compared to that of an expert. It is very hard to leave your expertise behind. I'm very happy that you can show me this game through the lens of beginners mind. Seeing where you look, what makes it work for you, what things are obvious to me and are not to you is enlightening, and helps me develop better perception and understanding. For example, I wouldn't consider how unobvious the game is about the fact you might or might not be able to stack multiple upgrades to Special and Attack, since they seem to occupy a slot, and changed if you pick up new ones. If that is the case, it is not communicated well!

This is also doubly unique to me since I know a decent amount about greek mythology, and some of the things in this game annoy me – for example, the way they portray Ares – mostly because modern pop culture is obsessed with Ares as some sort of tactical genius and incredibly cunning individual, a super-warrior who is strong both physically and mentally. This is not the mythological Ares at all, since mythological Ares was an embodiment of negative aspects of a warrior – he was impatient, hotheaded, arrogant and quite simply stupid. Which made him a buttmonkey of the mythology, since he got his ass kicked by everybody constantly, especially Athena, who was the embodiment of positive and desired qualities of a warrior – wisdom, discipline, cunning and restraint. Sadly, modern Ares tends to get idolized (along with Spartans, who were…kinda terrible, both as a society, and as warriors) and cannibalize positive aspects of other war-related gods (did you know that Aphrodite has a war-related aspect?), kinda completely missing the point.
…this tangent sidetracked me a lot, lol. Ill admit one of reasons why I didn't pick up this game is because I'm so burned on media shorthanding Hades as evil devil figure that I honestly expected this would be the same. So far, it does seem to give Hades some justice – as he was probably one of the most reasonable and least evil gods in the pantheon (he still had his issues, like the whole Persephone thing).

Anyway, I hope you will continue doing this, and embrace that your insights are valuable and interesting. Don't feel unequipped to talk about this game and your feelings and experiences. You being a newbie is exactly why your feedback is worth its weight in gold!!

  4. As far as rouge likes / bullet hell games go i don't think the controlls are that good, meaning i found it pretty hard to dodge bullets (tho you can gather so many health during a run that taking dmg won't really matter), i can only compare it to Enter the Gungeon where i think the game overall is harder but the dodging system is better. Atmosphere wise, Hades is really good tho.

  5. You made it all the way to the hydra on- what is this, your third run? And you did it going in blind, never having played any roguelikes before? That's legitimately incredible. On my third run ever, I don't think I had even reached Meg yet. And that you did it with nothing but a Dionysus cast boon and a hammer upgrade for most of the run is even crazier.

  6. Edit: Nevermind, Cowinspace covered this in more detail.

I'd have to double-check my greek mythology, but I THINK Aphrodite might be one of the majour gods least related to Zagreus. If I recall, she's born from Ouranos (sp?), who is Zeus and company's grandfather? Point being that she's not born of Cronus (therefore not an aunt), nor is she born from any of the other majour gods (not a direct cousin).

  7. "Is this gonna be what its like? Me getting mad at myself for doing stupid things?"

Welcome to roguelikes! Also congrats on beating Meg on your first try! With one health left too! Thats so cool!
I took me some attempts to beat her first time I played.

Edit: "Isn't she like my cousin" Incest is very common in greek mythology. Zeus literally had sex with Aphrodite (his daughter) and Hermes (his son) child ("Hermaphrodite") who had both female and male sexual organs, and honestly even in Greek times Cousin incest wasn't seen as a big deal at all.

  8. Holy cow, I can't believe you beat Meg on your first try! I got killed immediately haha; I thought for sure that the first time you fight Meg was meant to be almost-impossible for a first-timer, to get you used to the idea of having a roadblock to eventually overcome. Amazing job! You kept such a cool head during that fight and learned it quickly!

  9. "Isn't she my cousin?"

Don't worry about it at all. Incest is kind of like the tradition of the Greek gods. As they say, "there's no good party without blowing at least two sisters."

Anyway, Zagreus is the son of a woman born of a sister and brother's incestuous relationship. Who are Zagreus's uncle.
