Synthfest UK 22: Dreadbox – Erebus MK2 and Hades

It’s always a pleasure to dee Yiannis from Dreadbox, and he had two lovely new things to show us.

The new Erebus synth, with the same internals as the much-loved version 2 Erebus, but with a new, more stable oscillator design, and the Hades bass synth, both now come in a new standalone case that can be easily euroracked. They can both be powered via USB, and all connections appear on the front panel.

Yiannis also hinted at new instruments to come, but was keeping details close to his chest.

Available soon, Price: TBC

  1. I'm starting to feel like I'm the only one who prefers the V3 Erebus to the v2.
The 3rd Oscillator can take the v3 into Radiophonic Workshop territory with ease, – yeah it sounds a little different, but I would never say one sounds better than the other. It's Dreadbox ffs, everything they make is worth owning.
Plus, in my own personal experience their QC is much greater than that of Moog, and many other big name manufacturers,
    – especially when the retail prices are taken into account.

Nyx v2 is still my favourite Dreadbox, – the multi mode VCF, routing options, sync option, etc
Yes, the Splash reverb on the v1 was better, but I've got way more outboard and effects than I have synthesizers, so that's not really an issue for me. There are sounds I can get on the Nyx2 I can't get on any other synthesizer, – and I've owned quite a few over the the last 40+yrs, – it can be a little unruly, but via the patchbay, using CV, it can be pushed to produce all manner of twisted tones and textures…
    – Also, using an external Midi-CV converter offers a much wider octave range, plus control over Retrig options, etc.

    – I did remove the wooden end cheeks as soon as i got them both, and added vinyl switch covers.
Never been a fan of wood on synthesizers, aesthetically it just doesn't work for me, – probably just my OCD.

love to ALL, feel no hate

  2. my OG V2 died on me a few years ago… I guess sending it out for repair now would be half of the cost for a new V2 Mk2… I hope they can keep the price somewhere 500ish

  3. Yiannis should be in the same league as Dave Rossum, Don Buchla and Serge. He's bringing new insights to an existing field and making them available to the larger musical community. Yay Erebus!
