Hades is a roguelike action role-playing video game developed and published by Supergiant Games. It was released for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Nintendo Switch on September 17, 2020, which followed an early access release from December 2018.

Players control Zagreus, the son of Hades, as he attempts to escape from Underworld to reach Mount Olympus, at times aided by gifts bestowed on him from the other Olympians. Each run challenges the player through a random series of rooms populated with enemies and rewards. The game has a hack and slash combat system; the player uses a combination of their main weapon attack, dash power, and magic ability to defeat them while avoiding damage to progress as far as possible. While Zagreus will often die, the player can use gained treasure to improve certain attributes or unlock new weapons and abilities to improve chances of escaping on subsequent runs.

  1. Dropping in again with notes!

Since you keep disregarding calls and not learning about them, I'm going to give a full info dump on what they do and how they work.

Basically, they add an expendable meter attached to RT. The meter is displayed underneath your health bar, in segments that glow as you gain them. You gain this meter passively through an encounter, mostly by doing damage. I think it may also be provided by getting hit, but that might be behind another boon. When you gain an expendable bar, the bottom of the screen will also have a small flash so you don't need to take your eyes away from danger.

The meter DEPLETES TO ZERO after the room clears, so don't try to save it for later rooms. Get in the habit of throwing the call out like your casts in standard rooms.

Frequently the meter is used for one of two things: 'do a lot of damage immediately to this enemy' or 'make me invincible for a second so I can get out of danger'. Frequently both! I believe Athena is the only one that falls under that second category exclusively (admittedly, there's a second one that's spoilers)

Usually room encounters don't last long enough to get more than 1 or 2 bars, so throw them out whenever. The boss encounter, however, usually lasts long enough to get a full bar, known in game as a 'Greater Call'. This is expending the ENTIRE bar, with an added bonus effect for using the whole bar. Usually this translates to a giant nuke on a boss, deleting an entire phase of the fight. Keep in mind that many bosses (like the hydra), become invincible once their health hits a threshold, so it's best to try to save it for when it will be most beneficial.

Many gods also have boons that upgrade the effectiveness of calls, so it does make sense to pick them up earlier, so those upgrades are in the drop pool for the rest of your run.

To give an example of the nuking, Artemis' normal call (at the common rarity that you saw) at full bar translates to 10 seeking arrows that do 100 damage each, with 35% crit chance on hit. If there's one enemy and you use it in their face, that's 1000 guaranteed damage in a spike, plus whatever crits go through (don't actually know expected damage calculation on that, but my napkin math says base 100 damage with 35% for 3x damage from crits results in an average of 170 damage per arrow). According to the wiki, the Bone Hydra has ~6000 health, so that's a pretty big chunk!

Keep it up, we're rooting for you!

  2. I prefer to up rarity on boons over upping their level with Eurydice because I can just get poms anywhere, and level increases have diminishing returns up to level 5 typically (some just always give the same increase).
