In this video, I take on two questions from viewers: 1) Should I go to seminary if my wife isn’t on board? 2) What does the Apostles Creed mean by “He descended into Hell?”

I heard people like Jay Dyer saying that Jesus went down to Hell to preach the gospel to those who never had the chance to hear it, that being said, he wasn't damned as he defeated death and owns the gates to hades (I'm just paraphrasing so it may not be an exact quote, but something along those lines), I personally agree with him, would just like to know your thoughts on that view.
Hey Matthew, would you mind sharing your updated miscellanies journal with us in an upcoming video? I am going to start my own miscellanies journal soon and I'm interested to see how much progress you've made on yours
Matthew Everhard, the Bible says Jesus went to Hell, "Hades" the place of torment see Acts 2: 27-31. Lk 16: 22–25. He went there in our place so we don't have to. There are three places called Hell, in the New Testament, "Hades", the place of torment. "Tartarus" the place of the fallen angels and "Gehenna" the lake of fire. If you want to know what Jesus did from the cross to He went to Heaven, I will show you. Anyone who knows the Bible, will know that Jesus didn't finish salvation on the cross, He had to go to Hell, and He had to be raised from the dead so we can be free from sin, justified and be born again.
Thanks Matt. I’ve held to that reformed view as seen in Calvin whenever explaining the Apostles creed. However, last year I read Matthew Emerson’s new book “He Descended to the Dead: An Evangelical theology of holy Saturday” and I was very impressed with his arguments. It’s a fascinating book and one of the best I read last year. He makes the case that Jesus did not in fact go to Gehenna/hell but descended to the realm of the dead to proclaim victory to all those in Abraham’s bosom. His descent is actually part of his exultation / victory. Also he makes a pretty good case that the refined view of pointing to the cross has little support prior to Calvin and that it’s a post 15th century interpretation. Have you been able to read Emerson’s take? I’d be very interested to hear your thoughts. It also won CTs theology book of the year
Aquinas deals with the subject of Christ's decent into Hell in Part 3 Question 52 of his Summa https://www.newadvent.org/summa/4052.htm In the Summa the objections (wrong opinions) always come first. Afterwards Aquinas gives us his teaching (on the contrary) and his replies to the objections
